Master Degree Program (M.S.)
The M.S. program is designed as a strong first step toward the Ph.D., combining advanced coursework with supervised research that prepares students for professional mathematical work.
Typical duration
4 semesters (extendible by 2 more)
Coursework
21+ credits of graduate courses
Thesis
Prepare and successfully defend a Master’s thesis
Overview
An M.S. program is intended to be a first step towards the doctorate: it may be an exploration in some depth of a particular area of mathematics, or it may be an extension/completion of a higher level of education than achieved in undergraduate studies.
To be effective, it must deepen the student's experience in a specific area of knowledge and support professional competence. Students are expected to develop initiative and individual responsibility appropriate to their status as a mathematician.
Admission
Applicants should have a B.S. degree in Mathematics (or in science/engineering with sufficient preparation in mathematics) and should be proficient in English.
Evaluation is based on ALES scores, past academic record, and an interview at Bilkent University. Applicants who cannot take the ALES exam are evaluated based on GRE scores.
Please refer to the “Summary of requirements for admission to graduate programs” of the Graduate School of Engineering and Science.
Degree requirements
In addition to at least 21 credits of coursework, the M.S. degree candidate must prepare and successfully defend a thesis.
The usual duration of M.S. study is 4 semesters, extendible for 2 more semesters.
